- Check all water line conditions and faucets for leaks.
- Shower instead of taking a tub bath. Keep the shower to a minimum.
- Don't let water run while washing hands and brushing teeth.
- Check commodes for leaks by adding food coloring to the tank.
- Never run the dishwasher or washing machine without a full load.
- Keep a container of drinking water in the refrigerator.
- Do not use the toilet to dispose of cleaning tissues, cigarette butts or other trash.
- When purchasing new appliances, check water requirements of various models and brands.
- Water the lawn early in the morning during the hot months to reduce evaporation.
- Use a sprinkler that produces drops of water rather than a fine mist, which can easily be blown away in the wind.
- Don't over water.
- Learn to landscape your yard with types of plants that do not require large amounts of water.
- Consider decorating some areas of the yard with rocks, gravel, wood chips or other materials that do not require water.
- When washing your car, use a bucket of soapy water and use the hose to rinse it.
- Use a broom rather than a hose to clean the driveway, patio, sidewalk, or street.
- Replace your toilet with a low-flow toilet.
- Cover hot tubs and pools to reduce evaporation or use a recycling system.
- When thawing food do not use water
- Soak your pots and pans after eating instead of letting the water run while your doing it.
- Don't allow sprinklers to water your street, driveway or sidewalk. Position them so water lands on the lawn and shrubs and not on paved areas.
- Install irrigation devices that are the most water efficient for each use. Micro and drip Irrigation and soaker hoses are examples of water efficient irrigation methods.
- Avoid over fertilizing your lawn. Applying fertilizer increases your lawns need for water. To have the best of both worlds, apply fertilizers, which contain slow-release, water insoluble forms of nitrogen.
- Avoid purchasing recreational water toys that require a constant stream of water.
- Avoid installing ornamental water features ( such as fountains ) unless they use recycled water.
- Consider using a commercial car wash that recycles water. If you wash your own car, park on the grass and use the hose with an automatic shut-off nozzle.
- Forget about watering streets, sidewalks, or driveways.
- Never pour water down the drain when there may be another use for it. Use water you may discard to water indoor plants or garden.
- Place a glass jar in your toilet tank ( let it fill with water. ) This reduces the amount of water you use per flush.
- Take a shorter shower. Replace your showerhead with an ultra-low-flow showerhead. Some units are available that allow you to cut off the flow without adjusting the water temperature knobs.
- In the shower, turn water on to get wet; turn off to lather up; then turn the water back on to rinse off. Repeat when washing your hair.
- Think twice about installing a water-to-air heat pump or air-conditioning system. Newer air-to-air models are just as efficient and do not waste water.
- Check all hoses, connectors, and spigots regularly.
- Try to do one thing each day that will result in saving water.
